about

2017- While hiking on the Appalachian Trail, I crossed paths with a fella who would go on to be more way significant than I realized.

He introduced himself as “Denim” and he was walking from NYC, down to the Florida Keys. He had no ID, no cellphone, no plastic money, and no major hiking experience.

When we met in Georgia, it was like he and I had known each other for years.

We spent the evening chatting, going deep into our upbringings, our relationships and our interests outside of the trail. We really seemed to connect in the most human way.

From the outside, Denim seemed like a typical hiker; he seemed like me. Out on the trail trying to make sense of the chaos of the world around us.

We camped together at Springer Mountain Shelter, and shared breakfast the next morning. As we walked back to the trail head where we would both begin our walk for the day (in opposite directions) I felt a longing sadness come over me.

“Are you sure there’s no way to keep in touch?” I asked.

He smiled sadly and shook his head no.

I reached out my hand to shake his. He accepted, and we shared one last farewell.

And just like that he was gone.

Denim would later be found dead in his tent in Florida. In his possession were a couple notebooks of handwritten computer code, $3500 cash, and some basic hiking supplies. He weighed 83lbs when he was found.

Despite having met hundreds of people along his journey, no one (myself included) knew his real name, or his true home. He would remain in a Florida morgue for two years, unidentified.

Internet detectives, and journalists worldwide soon took an interest in his case and would go on to actually solve it. Denim was identified.

The truth though, was not what we hoped.

He was a guy who made some really big mistakes (like me), and he took to the trail to try to figure them out (like me). He was not perfect (like me). He was not always kind (like me).

He was not who we built him up to be in our hopeful minds. But at the very least, Vance was heading home; for whatever that’s worth.

My new song “I’ve Been Thinking” will be out on 04/21.

I dedicate it to Vance, my friend Trish, and the human condition.

lyrics

I've been thinking about running away again
About calling all my friends
Just to tell-em' that I'm never coming back

I've been thinking of putting on my big backpack
Throwing on my trusty wrags
And hitting the trail again

Walk on Monday
Walk on Tuesday
Walk on Wednesday
Walk on Thursday
Walking on Friday
Walking on Saturday
Walk on Sunday
What was my name?

I've been thinking bout what you said to me last week
How you wanted me to leave
To Get my head on straight

I've been thinking
I'm thinking you might be right this time
Maybe I'll make up my mind and decide
Just where it is I'm going
I've been thinking

Walk on Monday
Walk on Tuesday
Walk on Wednesday
Walk on Thursday
Walking on Friday
Walking on Saturday
Walk on Sunday
What was my name?

And stop wasting your time
It's only good for a little while
And stop wasting your mind
It's only good for a little while
It goes..

And stop wasting you life
You're only young for a little while
And Start taking your time
What good is it to rush?
It goes..
